East Retford Rugby Club dish out the awards at their annual bash

The players who starred in the Notts Juniorr Cup final win over Bingham were all presented with commemorative medals.

The first team’s Man of the Match Awards trophy went to Simon Phillips, who played in 27 out of 29 games and took the most votes from the opposition teams.

A new player to the senior sides, Will Wilkinson, picked up the second team equivalent, despite playing out of position due to his age.

The top try scorer for the firsts was Josh Nicklin.

His devastating pace on the wing helped him to 12 tries in a difficult season.

Curtis Holland crossed the line nine times for the second team, playing the majority of his games in the back row.

Most Improved Player was shared between James Wright, who trains hard week in and week out and is challenging for the first team’s second row spot, and James Green, whose enthusiasm and support for his team-mates was invaluable last season.

The Captains’ Awards for the first team went to Nick Brough and Simon Phillips, for their help towards the team, captain and vice captain.

For the seconds, Mitchell Rose picked up the award.

Junior Player of the Year was Josh Nicklin, selected as the best player under 19 at the club.

For the seniors, the Robin Hempsall Award went to Iain Balmer who had a superb season, showing full commitment.

Lynn Spencer and Jackie Wright were presented with flowers for their hard work all year, while Tony Randall and Kurt Spencer received a bottle.

The first team players gave the Craig Cooper Memorial Shield to Josh Nicklin, his third gong of the night, two votes ahead of captain Richard South and Iain Balmer.

Will Wilkinson was the second team Players’ Player of the Year, taking home a brand new award.

A club spokesman said the season ended well, even if it was tough at times.

“It was a very difficult season.”

“But to survive in a higher division and to come away with a cup win, and to bring on so many new and young players, the future for Retford looks bright.”
