Making record-breaking highways investment go further on key Nottinghamshire route

A major programme of improvements to the A57 is continuing in Worksop, with full resurfacing at Shireoaks being the latest scheme to take place on one of the most important routes through north Nottinghamshire.

The work forms part of Nottinghamshire County Council's record £181.25 million Highway Capital Maintenance Programme, which is delivering improvements across the county during 2026 to 2027, with more than 400 roads receiving resurfacing treatments this year.

The record investment is helping to reduce the county's maintenance backlog, while stretching the funds as far as possible.

Choosing the right treatment for each road is a key part of that.

The latest phase of resurfacing on the A57 follows surface dressing and other maintenance on stretches of the route.

The scheme has also included the resurfacing of Shireoaks Common, from the A57 to the railway station.

Councillor Bert Bingham, cabinet member for transport and environment, visited the works to see the improvements being delivered.

He said: “With more than 400 roads receiving resurfacing treatments this year, we're making real progress in tackling the county's maintenance backlog.

“But it's also important we make every pound of that investment work as hard as possible. A big part of that is choosing the right treatment for the right road.

“Where a road needs full resurfacing, like this section of the A57 and Shireoaks Common, that's what we need to deliver.

"But where we can step in earlier and protect a road with preventative treatments such as surface dressing, we should be doing that too.

“The A57 is particularly important because it is a major route across the north of Nottinghamshire, linking the M1 and A1 and carrying local and through traffic around Worksop.

“By bringing the resurfacing of Shireoaks Row into the same scheme, we're making the work more efficient and reducing the need for separate closures and disruption.

"Together with the work already carried out on stretches of the A57, we're improving and protecting this important route for the people who rely on it.”

Surface dressing is a preventative treatment that seals the road surface.

The Shireoaks Common resurfacing forms part of a wider programme of highway improvements being delivered by Nottinghamshire County Council and its highways partner Via East Midlands across Bassetlaw and the rest of the county.
