Apprentice from Worksop represents 'new talent' at company celebration in Dublin

An apprentice at a Worksop food manufacturing business was invited to Dublin recently as part of the company's centenary celebrations.

Olivia Uttley, a technical degree apprentice at Greencore’s Manton Wood site, represented the ‘next generation of talent' at a special dinner with colleagues both past and present, and guests including An Taoiseach Micheál Martin and the UK Ambassador to Ireland, Kara Owen.

The evening brought together generations of Greencore colleagues, from former leaders who have helped shape the business over its 100-year history to colleagues who will play a part in its future.

Olivia joined Greencore through its Technical Degree Apprenticeship programme, combining a role in the business with studying for a bachelor’s degree in food science and technology.

Since joining, she has gained experience across quality assurance, technical services, hygiene and process development, giving her the opportunity to explore different aspects of a career in food.

Olivia said: “The opportunities the programme has presented to me continue to amaze me, and I’m so grateful for each and every one provided by Greencore.

"There are people here with an incredible depth of experience, but there are also people like me who are just starting out and have the opportunity to learn from them.

"I’ve got big ambitions for my career. I’d love to continue developing as a technical professional and, one day, perhaps even find myself on Greencore’s executive board."

Greencore began life in 1926 as Irish Sugar. Today, its 28,000 colleagues bring together generations of knowledge and expertise, while the company continues to invest in attracting and developing new talent to help shape its future.

Cathy Hough, head of early careers at Greencore, said: “Our centenary is an opportunity to celebrate the people and expertise that have shaped Greencore over the last 100 years, but it is every bit as much about looking ahead.

"That’s why it was important that colleagues like Olivia were part of our celebrations. We want talented people starting their careers with Greencore to see just how many possibilities there are here, and to have the opportunity to learn from the extraordinary experience that exists across our business.”

Greencore employs around 1,700 colleagues at Manton Wood and offers early careers routes including apprenticeships, graduate programmes, internships and industrial placements.
