Jobless number is highest in county

Latest figures from the Office For National Statistics show seven per cent of people in the Gainsborough area were out of work and claiming Jobseekers Allowance in January.

The figures reveal the extent of the current economic climate, with employers feeling the pinch and some workers losing their jobs.

During the first month of the year 68 more people became jobless, taking the total in Gainsborough and surrounding villages to 1,362 - a rise of five per cent.

But apart from being top of the list, Gainsborough is no different to any area of Lincolnshire.

Unemployment has risen across the county, with the second and third highest rates in Skegness and Mablethorpe.

A total of 16,032 people are now out of work in Lincolnshire. But while the figure is higher than in January 2010, the total number of people claiming unemployment benefit in Lincolnshire is lower by 300.

This is because unemployment peaked after the recession.

Young jobseekers in Lincolnshire aged 18-24 have risen by 360 people to 5,450. This is around 905 higher than last January.

A spokesman for Jobcentre Plus in Gainsborough said the labour market was undoubtedly still tough in the town, and across the country.

“Through Jobcentre Plus alone there are currently more than 360 jobs advertised in the area, with more opportunities available through other agencies,” she said.

“So it’s important people don’t give up looking for work, as new jobs become available every day.”

“We’re here in Jobcentre Plus to help people, not only with their job search but also by providing support necessary to help them find work.”

Specialist tailored support is given to the long-term unemployed through the Work Programme.

While young people can take advantage of work experience opportunities and apprenticeships with local employers.

She added: “Under the Get Britain Working measures, there are three Work Clubs in Gainsborough and an Enterprise Club in Lincoln, supporting people looking to go self employed.”

Despite the gloomy unemployment statistics, there is hope on the horizon with new companies moving into town creating a much needed jobs boost.

• McDonald’s is due to open later this year where it’s hoped 25 full time and 40 part time jobs will be created.

• Construction of a new Spar and shopping centre on Corringham Road is due to start this month, creating at least 20 jobs.

• Permission has been granted for Marston’s Inns and Taverns to build a new family pub near Somerby Park Industrial Estate with the creation of 50 jobs.

• High end department store Browns Of York hopes to open in Marshall’s Yard in August creating another 24 local jobs.
