Retford-born actor forges new link with the town following recent visit

Acclaimed actor Philip Jackson, whose career spans five decades, has become a patron of the Friends of Bassetlaw Museum.

The actor who was born and spent his childhood in Retford was in the town a few weeks ago for Heritage Day, when he hosted a question and answer session as the Bassetlaw Museum.

Mr Jackson grew up in Retford and attended the King Edward Vl Grammar School before leaving to study Drama and German at Bristol University.

His interest in drama began quite young as he would perform with a local church youth club. By 1969, he had become a fully fledged actor.

The 78-year old is married with two children and now lives in West Sussex.

Well known for various film, television and radio roles, the actor played Chief Inspector Japp in Agatha Christie’s ‘Poirot’ and Abbot Hugo in ‘Robin of Sherwood', along with his noted contributions to the much loved films ‘Brassed Off’ and ‘Little Voice’.

Then there are his drama and comedy appearances on a range of Radio 4 programmes, most recently as Geoff in the third series of ‘The Break’.

Posting on social media, the Friends of Bassetlaw Museum said: 'It is unclear who is more delighted that Philip has agreed to become our Patron: The Friends for landing such a prestigious local figure or Philip who has said that it gives him another tangible connection with his home town.

'What is shared, is that we are all looking forward to working together to promote the aims of The Friends and the Museum.'
