Gaming Review: Transformers: Rise Of The Dark Spark

Transformers are back on the movie screens with the latest blockbuster Age of extinction and surprise, surprise there’s a new Transformers video game out at the same time, oddly called Transformers: Rise Of The Dark Spark, this has nothing to do with the movie at all.

The Dark spark is a powerful artefact that can rip holes in dimensions and therefore bring the two transformers universes together, a sort of evil version of the All Spark.

To be honest the plot is pretty irrelevant really and unless you are a hard core Transformers fan you won`t care, what is important is whether this game is worth you handing over cash for, and the answer is no.

The previous games were not bad and I enjoyed both of them yet here Activision is just re hashing the same concept with slightly different backgrounds, don`t get me wrong it isn`t a bad game just un inspiring, and since Edge of Reality took over the franchise form High Moon Studios it looks like they are playing safe with this one.

Gameplay is OK not spectacular a basic third person shooter and there are plenty of weapons to choose from, again if you have played the other titles you won`t find anything new here.

Upgrades come in the shape of the Gear boxes which are accessible via the menu and consist of character (for on line play) and weapon upgrades, an interesting concept but not enough to blow my skirt up.

What lets this game down is the dull gameplay, enemies can be dispatched easily and there just isn`t that buzz about it that gets those high five moments when you complete a level.

OK it does get better as you progress but not overly so and fails to fire the imagination.

Graphics are again mediocre, backgrounds are uninspiring and bland, the robots themselves look OK yet they aren`t very impressive.

The online play called escalation is again dull and uninspiring with a four player co-op mode which is a basic wave mode game and does offer more scope with the weapons but does become boring after a while.

Summary

Transformers: Rise Of The Dark Spark doesn`t really come up to the standards of its previous titles and to be honest is pretty dull and uninspiring, if you are a huge fan of the franchise then by all means rush out and buy it, as for the rest of us wait until it hits the bargain bin.
