Wise Owl: Sheffield Wednesday squad far from ready

With pre season about to begin, the Sheffield Wednesday squad is looking far from complete.

Sure Gary Megson has made some good signings with the backing of Milan ‘the Saviour’ Mandaric – but far from enough.

I always think it’s good to have all the signings made close to the start of pre-season so the squad has plenty of time to gel before the season begins.

Wednesday have so far signed Swindon midfield David Prutton and last season’s on loan defender Rob Jones.

Next week looks like being a busy one with all out of contact players having to decide their fate by 30th June.

For Wednesday this means trio James O’Connor, Jermaine Johnson and Lewis Buxton need to get a wriggle on and decide whether they want to stay at Hillsborough.

I think James O’Connor could be easily replaced, while Lewis Buxton would be good to keep hold of.

I would be sad to see Jermaine Johnson leave. With his pace he can frighten any opposition and turn a game on its head in a flash. If Megson can get him playing at the same level for 90 minutes then he will be one of the best players in the league.

As the talks with Neil Mellor continue to drag on and on... and on, Megson is apparently in search for at least another if the Wednesdayite fails to sign for the Owls.

He definitely needs another forward even more so after releasing Paul Heffernan last week. I’m sorry to say, but I’m not sad to see him leave. He was never really given the chance to prove himself and quickly fell out of favour when Megson was appointed. High on Megson’s shopping list is highly-rated Ipswich Town striker Jason Scotland.

Also saying goodbye to S6 this week was midfielder Darren ‘Harry’ Potter. I was surprised to see he made over 100 appearances for the Owls. A solid midfielder but someone I think we can replace.

Hopefully by the next time I write my next words of wisdom we’ll have a squad we can all be proud of.

Up the Owls,
