Emily Spencer, from Worksop, joined mum Sally and boyfriend Jack to tackle the 13-mile obstacle course which includedmud slides, fire pits, ice baths and ‘electric shock therapy’ to support nephew Alfie who is treated at the hospital.

Emily, 20, said: “It was fun, but it was really tough.”

“We managed to complete the 13-mile course in three and a half hours and we just kept thinking about Alfie.”

“We were aching and in pain doing it, but if a two-year-old can handle all the pain he has been through, then we could finish an obstacle course.”

At just eight months old, Alfie suffered from reflux after developing a hole in his esophagus and a blockage.

He received Nissen fundoplication treatment at The Children’s Hospital in Sheffield to tie a knot in his stomach and prevent refluxing.

After developing numerous chest infections, Alfie, now three, went on to receive treatment on his lungs and is currently undergoing tests to find out if he has autism.

Alfie’s health problems can affect his everyday life, as he struggles to sleep and digest food.

However, Alfie’s mum, Kayleigh Spencer, said: “Nothing seems to bother or faze him.”

“He is a very strong-minded little boy and although he struggles with pain, he just gets on with life.”

“The staff at The Children’s Hospital in Sheffield are so helpful.”

“They tested different medication and did a lot of investigating.”

“They are so willing to do anything to help and listen to everything I have to say.”

“The consultant helps me understand and gives me advice on making decisions about Alfie.”
