Rotherham: Event for area’s sign language community

Organised by South Yorkshire Service for Deaf People with Mental Health Needs, which is run by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), the event will include stalls and presentations, and British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters will be available throughout the evening.

The service is jointly commissioned by clinical commissioning groups in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. It works with mental health teams across South Yorkshire to support the care and treatment of deaf people, as well as working with deaf and hearing carers to support them in looking after their relatives with mental health problems.

South Yorkshire Project Lead for the Deaf Rebecca Walls said: “About one in four hearing people are likely to experience a mental health problem at some point during their lives, but for deaf and hard of hearing people this figure is even higher.

“This event aims to show deaf people experiencing mental health problems they are not alone, and provide information on the variety of services available to them and their carers.”
