African choir in fine voice

THE voices of African children filled a Maltby church last week during a special performance.

The Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda took part in a colourful and energetic performance at the Maltby Full Life Church.

The choir is made up of youngsters , aged between seven and 14, whose parents have died as a result of AIDS, war, or poverty.

But they travel the world spreading a message of hope through their music.

Dozens of members, in colourful, traditional Ugandan outfits, wowed the packed hall throughout their performance.

The Full Life Church have an ongoing link with the choir and were delighted to host the performance.

The Watoto choir was formed among children helped in Uganda by Watoto Childcare Ministries, a charity founded in 1994 by husband-and-wife team Gary and Marilyn Skinner.

Among their projects is the Watoto children’s villages where orphans are raised in family settings, rather than institutions.

The hope is that these children will become the future leaders of Africa.

Previous tours for the choir have included South Africa, Australia, Canada, China and Japan.

They are currently on a six month tour of the UK and performed as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations at Windsor Castle.
