Community stay on top in convincing fashion

SJR Worksop Women’s Community Team continued their fantastic league form with an impressive 5–2 victory over a determined Penistone Church Women.

In challenging conditions, SJR had to show plenty of character, quality and determination to secure another valuable three points and maintain their position at the top of the table.

SJR made a bright start and were rewarded with the opening goal inside the first ten minutes. However, there was little time to celebrate as Penistone responded almost immediately, finding an equaliser just a minute later.

The opening exchanges were competitive, with the first half proving scrappy at times. Despite that, SJR enjoyed the majority of possession, controlled much of the play and continued to create opportunities.

There were chances to extend the lead, and while not everything came off, SJR’s attacking quality eventually told as they headed into the half-time break with a deserved 3–1 advantage.

Penistone came out with renewed determination after the interval and started the brighter of the two sides.

Their pressure was rewarded when an awkward bounce in front of the SJR goalkeeper caused problems, with the ball drifting over her head and into the net to make it 3–2.

Suddenly, the game was back in the balance.

But this SJR side showed exactly why they are enjoying such an impressive run of form.

Rather than allowing the pressure to build, the ladies regrouped, settled themselves and began to take control once again.

With experience, composure and quality throughout the team, SJR finished the game strongly, adding two further goals to secure a convincing 5–2 victory.
