From Bassetlaw to Hawaii: Barnaby Gray completes inspiring ironman journey
For endurance athletes around the globe, reaching the starting line of the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, represents the pinnacle of the sport.

For Bassetlaw Triathlon Club’s own Barnaby Gray, competing on triathlon's most iconic and gruelling stage marked the triumphant culmination of years of relentless dedication, sacrifice, and perseverance.
Securing a legacy slot for the legendary Kona event is no small feat, but for Barnaby, this journey carried a far deeper meaning. Racing on the global stage, he took on the ultimate physical challenge to raise vital funds and awareness for the mental health charity Mind, dedicating his gruelling effort in memory of his nephew, Ben.
Kona is notorious for being the most punishing single-day endurance test on earth, and race day delivered its trademark elements in full force. Athletes faced a punishing combination of stifling tropical heat, soaring humidity, and the notorious, searing crosswinds of the Hawaiian lava fields along the desolate Queen K Highway.

Barnaby took everything the elements could throw at him in his stride. He confronted the non-wetsuit 2.4-mile ocean swim in Kailua Bay, pushed through the energy-sapping 112-mile bike leg amidst the baking black lava rocks, and dug deep for the punishing 26.2-mile marathon run through the infamous Energy Lab. Relying on years of grit and mental fortitude, he crossed the historic finish line on Ali'i Drive, flying the flag high for Bassetlaw and completing a truly heroic campaign.
Having completed the epic endurance event Barnaby said: “My journey to Kona has been a dream nearly 20 years in the making through the world of Ironman. Having completed 14 full Ironman races, qualifying for the World Championships in Kona was something I never imagined would become a reality.
“It has taken years of commitment, sacrifice, hard work and determination, balancing training with work and family life, but I’ve always believed that age is an attitude and you should never stop dreaming.
“Qualifying at Ironman Lanzarote in May was a huge moment, but arriving in Kona and lining up alongside the best in the world was something else entirely. Crossing that finish line was about so much more than completing another Ironman; it was the culmination of a dream and the end of a very special chapter in my life.
“The experience was made even more meaningful by the incredible support of my wife, Mandy, family, friends and my Triathlon Clubs. Having some very special family and friends make the journey to Hawaii to support me made it even more unforgettable. There was also a very personal element to the journey, raising money for MIND in memory of my nephew, Ben, who we sadly lost following his struggles with mental health. Knowing that we reached our fundraising target before race day gave the whole experience an even greater purpose.“
