Worksop battle to important win at Marine
Worksop Town picked up their first win in five games with a battling 1-0 win away against Marine at the weekend.
Lewis Whitham started the Tigers on the front foot when a throughball from Vaughan Redford set him free in the 4th minute, but his low shot from outside the box was comfortably saved by Jack McIntyre.
A deep free kick ten minutes later from Leigh Whelan almost caused Worksop some defensive problems but luckily nobody inside the box was able to get a touch to turn it in.
The hosts’ next big chance came from George Kattah later in the half from a quick counterattack after a corner which forced an important block from Mason O’Malley.
It was Deegan Atherton’s turn to put in an important block in the 38th minute to deny a low shot from Fin Sinclair-Smith after a loose ball from Redford gave him space on the edge of the box.
Whitham started the second half similarly to the first as he created the first chance by cutting in from the left wing and attempting to curl a shot into the far corner, although it was slightly the wrong side of the post.
The Tigers continued the forward momentum when Oli Greaves broke free a minute later and forced a deflection from Declan Drysdale.
However, the resulting corner gave the Tigers the opener in the 51st minute when Redford scrappily turned the ball over the line after a poor clearance.
Marine attempted to get back into the game when Josh Wardle got on the end of a Sinclair-Smith freekick, however his header trailed wide of the left post.
Ryan Viggars turned the momentum back in the Tigers’ favour with a low shot minutes later to force a save out of McIntyre after getting on the end of a through ball from Whitham.
The hosts attempted to grab a late equaliser, however our defence stood strong to maintain the victory.
