Trench treble digs Town out of trouble in cup tie

DINNINGTON Town put their recent poor league form behind them as they battled to a 3-2 League Cup win over Teversal after extra-time.

The player who will get all the headlines was skipper Michael Trench for his hat-trick of penalties, but it was the young back four who caught the eye with an assured performance.

Manager Steve Toyne took the opportunity to blood some reserve players at Phoenix Park and they did not let him down.

First team regulars Cartledge, Wade and Roper all started on the bench.

There was little action in the first 20 minutes as both sides struggled in the slippery conditions.

The first excitement came when makeshift striker Greg Ramsden rounded the visitor’s keeper and with the goal at his mercy the ball stuck in the mud and was cleared.

Trench’s first penalty came after 34 minutes when he was brought down, and then stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way.

His second came on the stroke of half-time when Ramsden was upended and despite Teversal’s protests, Trench remained calm to beat the keeper with a powerful shot.

In the second half Town continued to attack but were unable to take their chances to put the game out of reach.

Teversal’s efforts were rewarded 10 minutes from time when Colin Cockerill scored with a free-kick from 25 yards.

Town’s supporters were then getting nervous about an equaliser and extra-time and the inevitable happened on 85 minutes when Jamie Hudson scored at the far post.

Extra-time arrived and the match continued to give both sets of supporters nervous moments until, on 103 minutes, substitute Liam Cartledge was brought down for Town’s third penalty of the evening.

Regular pen taker Cartledge was unable to get the ball away from Trench who stepped up score the winner, and his hat-trick, with a fierce shot into the top of the net.
