‘Tom, Tom, Tom Denton’ on his love for the fans

And the vocal support of the Worksop Town fans was a major factor in 6ft 5ins Denton agreeing a deal to remain with the club.

Denton, who was bought from Alfreton last season, attracted interest from other clubs this summer.

But he told the Guardian that he loved his first season at Sandy Lane, and was looking forward to playing in front of the Worksop fanbase again, alongside Leon Mettam.

“The supporters were great with me from the second game, and were singing my name to the last,” he said.

“I haven’t got a bad word to say about any of them.”

“I was always thinking about staying put, despite three or four offers from elsewhere.”

Denton scored 22 goals last season, in just 35 appearances, and formed a 45-goal partnership with Leon Mettam.

The ‘little and large’ duo were often the scourge of Northern Premier League defences, who won’t be pleased about facing them once more.

Denton said: “Leon re-signing was massive for the club, and it also helped me make up my mind to stay.”

“We have a really good understanding and get on well off the pitch too.”

The pair recommitting came as somewhat of a surprise to some, after the club made no secret of the fact that the budget was being slashed.

Denton downplayed the importance of the change in financial ethos however.

“The pay cuts are not an issue to me, I like playing for the club and I turned down more money at other clubs to stay.”

And now that he’s signed up for another season, he’s already plotting another prolific campaign, and a chance to become a more senior figure in the dressing room.

“I say it every year, my target will be 20 goals, and hopefully a lot of assists for Leon and the midfielders.”

“I’ll be passing all my thoughts down to the younger boys and hopefully they can play a key part this year.”

“Mark (Shaw, manager) and Pete (Shuttleworth, assistant) have been great and we’re hoping for another good year.”
