Rampant Retford hit 10

RETFORD United showed their title credentials on Saturday as they hit an incredible 10 goals past Nostell Miners Welfare.

It was a miserable trip to Cannon Park for the Welfare side as they went down 10-1.

United took the lead on 11 minutes, Warren Hatfield with his first of the afternoon.

Adam Colton set Karl Slack on a run down the right, he crossed and Hatfield couldn’t miss from close range.

Two minutes later the score was doubled, this time it was the impressive Colton with his second in two games after a neat one-two with Carl Snowden, drilling the ball past the keeper.

Against the run of play Nostell pulled a goal back on 23 minutes, Brandon Kane looping the ball over the stranded Jason Fisher after a long punt upfield.

The lead was incresed again three minutes later however, Carl Snowden heading home under pressure from defenders, meeting Chris Baugh’s superb cross.

The fourth came courtesy of Slack, running on to Colton’s pass to beat the advancing keeper.

With the second half only a minute old, Hatfield scored his second of the game as he lashed home from just inside the box for 5-1.

Colton’s second accounted for Retford’s sixth, the young midfielder firing in from Slack’s cross.

Nostell’s afternoon got steadily worse, and on 55 minutes Hatfield secured a deserved hat-trick, beating the offside trap to dispatch the ball past the keeper for his 23rd of the season.

Adam Scott made it 8-1 as he cut in from the left, and then won a penalty that he subsequently converted for number nine.

The rout was complete on 87 minutes and ironically it was the man in the number 10 shirt who got the goal, Slack’s decisive finish giving him his brace to complete a perfect afternoon for Brett Marshall’s side, with the news that their closest rivals, Bridlington Town lost at Staveley.

The win puts United back on top of the division, now having played the same number of games as Bridlington and with three games left, the final match of the season against Bridlington may well have a lot of significance as to where the league title goes.

United are back in action on Saturday (21st) as they host Thackley AFC at Cannon Park, followed by the visit of Staveley MW the following Tuesday evening (24th) before setting up a huge tie on the 24th as United travel to Bridlington Town to round off the season.

There are still a number of places available on the coach to Bridlington, priced at only £10, please call 07825 047766 to book your seat.
