Davis itching for a return

The 21-year-old, signed from Gainsborough Trinity in the summer, picked up a horrific knee injury in the fifth friendly of the pre-season at Ossett Albion and went under the knife in December.

As he prepares to finally start jogging again in the next few weeks, on the next step in his rehabilitation, Davis described the moment his season ended before it had even began.

“It was horrible,” he admitted.

“I had just signed a contract, we were playing against Ossett and I had gone in and won the ball then tried to push off and my foot got stuck in the ground so my knee twisted and I felt it go.”

“I went for a scan and they said I needed an operation on my anterior cruciate ligament.”

The operation took place on 11th December, and surgeons took a graft from the back of his leg to strengthen the ligament.

Much to the relief of Harworth’s Davis, the procedure was a complete success, and after three weeks on crutches, he began his recovery.

He told the Guardian “I’ve been going to knee classes nearly every night, trying to build it up nice and steady.”

“I’m trying to strengthen it with squats and the bike. They told me that as long as I’m careful, it will be stronger than it was before.”

Although the former Rotherham United man has been almost ever-present at Sandy Lane this season, cheering on his team-mates, he concedes that the injury has at times left him isolated.

“It’s horrible, having to watch from the sides.”

“Martin McIntosh went and a new gaffer (Simon Clark) came in, but I spoke with him and he was great with me, so was the chairman.”

“I’ve tried to keep my face around the place because I want to see the lads, but sometimes you don’t feel a part of it and you want to.”

“The lads have been decent though.”

His long-awaited return to action should happen this summer, if not a little before, and it can’t come too soon for Davis.

“If I do everything right, it will be the summer time, maybe before. I’m still contracted to the club and I still want to be there.”

“I want to play for Worksop and I can’t wait to get back on the pitch.”

Having spent the entire season as an interested spectator, Davis is well qualified to comment on Worksop Town’s progress – and he’s encouraged by what he sees.

“I think we’ve been very good at times,” he said.

“The lads seem together and hopefully we can get lucky and get into the play-offs, that’s what I’m hoping for.”
