The home side were without skipper Glen O’Gara who twisted his ankle in the warm-up, while Retford brought in Scott Bibby and Reece Thompson.

The opening goal came on six minutes, and it was Thompson who rose to head home Graeme Severn’s cross for a 1-0 lead.

On 20 minutes it was 2-0, Liam Wilkin thumping the ball past the keeper after a break by Thompson on the right.

Nostell had a chance right at the end of the first half with the ball whipped in across goal, Tom Hope unable to get a touch as a rare chance went begging.

Retford extended their lead on 63 minutes however, Wilkin picking up his second goal with an assist from Severn.

Danny Critchlow should have pulled a goal back for the home side, but was stopped in his tracks by a superb challenge from Craig Fisher.

More pressure from Retford, and on 73 minutes another goal, this time Thompson with his second after Wilkins header was parried.

Wilkin, playing his last game before a three match suspension after his sending off against Maltby, was looking for his hat-trick and getting increasingly frustrated as he fired his chances over the bar or at the keeper.

The final goal came on 78 minutes, Lee Holmes getting the last touch as the ball bobbled around the box to seal a good victory.

United now face Worksop Parramore on Saturday at the Jones & Co Stadium (3pm kick-off) in a Bassetlaw derby clash.
