Wiseton cling on for a losing draw

WISETON clung on to claim a losing draw at home to Grassmoor in their penultimate match in Division Two of the Bassetlaw Cricket League on Saturday.

The visitors batted first and posted a score of 198 for the loss of eight wickets with Wiseton’s Matt Gorman taking three for 51.

In reply 41 from Mick White and 36 from Tom Lane saw them get to 191 but with just one wicket remaining when the overs ran out they were pleased to get the draw and nine points.

After showing tremendous form for most of the season, Wiseton have struggled in the last few weeks but two points from Saturday’s final match should see them finish second and gain promotion to Division One.

Also in Division Two, Lea Park went down to a big defeat at Farnsfield. They scored 184 for eight (Chris Needham 39 and Andy Whiteley 31) but the hosts easily passed that total for the loss of just three wickets.

Meanwhile, in The Championship Marshalls first suffered another defeat when they entertained Farnsfield at Middlefield Lane. They scored just 108 and could not prevent the visitors from going on to win by six wickets.

North Wheatley with Leverton firsts emerged from their match away to Ordsall Bridon with a winning draw and 17 points to cement their mid-table position.

A fine innings of 93 by Jon Loates and good supporting knocks by Peter John-Jansen and Will Savill (both 33) helped their side to a total of 267 all out but, despite 3-36 from Callum Harrison and 3-54 from Jamie Bovill, Wheatley couldn’t quite prise out all the Ordsall batsmen and the hosts finished their overs on 210 for seven.

In Division One Everton first went down to an eight-wicket defeat at Mansfield and Pleasley, the hosts bowling them out for just 98 and then cruising past that total, losing just two wickets in the process.

In Division Four the Rose Leisure bandwagon rolls on. This time they beat second-placed Killamarsh seconds by 72 runs, scoring 247 all out and then dismissing their opponents for 175.

The Gainsborough side are guaranteed fourth place but unfortunately their great run has come too late to get them promotion.

Also in this division Marshalls seconds claimed a good victory at Whitwell. They restricted the hosts to 127 for nine with Will Birkett taking three for 20 and Todd Wray three for 50, and then were thankful for an innings of 44 from Ian Brooks as they passed that total for the loss of six wickets.

In Division Five North Wheatley with Leverton seconds and Misterton met at South Wheatley with the hosts getting a winning draw and 16 points.

Wheatley batted first and scored 206 for nine with Nick Cleaver top-scoring with 62 and Dave Emmingham taking three for 51 for Misterton.

The visitors could not quite keep up with the required run rate when they batted and were on 174 for six at the end of play with Emmingham scoring 50, R. Taylor 45 and M. Boscolo 42, and they had to be content with nine points. For Wheatley Rob Hackney returned impressive figures of three for 12.

Misterton are third in the table with just an outside chance of gaining promotion.
