Travellers' site turned down by planners

A delayed decision to build for a travellers' site in a quiet village has been made, with planners opting to reject the proposal.

The site had been earmaked on land at Wellow, between Newark Road and Wellow Road.

The application had been submitted by landowner, William Calladine, for eight ‘short-term transit pitches’, plus shower, laundry and toilet block.

He argued the site was unused and regularly has to be cleared from fly-tipped rubbish.

The issue had been brought before Newark and Sherwood District Council’s planning meeting late last year, but was deferred.

But following a discussion during the recent planning meeting, the proposals was voted down by a majority of nine members to six.
