Lucas Thorpe, a pupil at Treeton C of E Primary School, was struck moments after leaving his grandparents’ house on Arundel Avenue, Treeton at around 5.40pm yesterday (Monday).
The eight-year-old was taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital with serious injuries, including a broken leg, fractured eye socket, fractured skull, and a head injury.
The youngster underwent emergency surgery to release pressure on his brain and to stop a bleed, and was placed in intensive care in an induced coma.
But Lucas is now on a normal ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital after amazing doctors with the speed of his recovery.
The man from Swallownest was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident, and having no driving licence and insurance.
Officers are continuing their enquiries in relation to the circumstances surrounding the incident, and would like to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time.
