The 25-year-old, who has made 38 appearances for Villa since joining them from Middlesbrough for around £2.75m in August 2012, will remain at Hillsborough until June 30.

Bennett passed a medical this morning and will wear squad number 12. He is expected to straight into the squad for Saturday’s trip to Reading.

Rochdale-born Bennett has only featured once for Villa during the 2015/16 campaign, coming on as a substitute and scoring in their 5-3 Capital One Cup victory over Notts County.

Bennett, who can be deployed on the left wing, recently saw his loan spell at Bournemouth cut short. He joined the Cherries on deadline day last September but failed to make a single appearance before suffering an Achilles injury.

Having shrugged off the problem, Bennett is poised to compete with Czech Republic international Daniel Pudil for a starting berth.

His imminent arrival may spell the end for Rhoys Wiggins, who is believed to be attracting the interest of Brighton and Bristol City.

Capped at England Under-19, U20 and U21 level, Bennett started his career at Boro, racking up 92 appearances before heading to Villa.

Opportunities to impress have been in short supply for Bennett in recent years at Villa Park, with the Midlands outfit preferring Aly Cissokho and Kieran Richardson on the left hand side of their defence.

He spent last season on loan at Brighton, featuring 42 times.
