Boss Carlos Carvalhal has lavished praise on 'fantastic' goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, claiming Wednesday's number one fully deserved his contract extension.

Republic of Ireland international Westwood extended his current deal last week, committing his future to the South Yorkshire club until the summer of 2019.

Westwood moved to Hillsborough over two years ago and has been a key figure in the club’s resurgence. He was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Season after helping them keep 17 league clean sheets in the 2014/15 campaign.

Carvalhal said: “I’m happy because Keiren is a good pro. He is a good goalkeeper and we are happy that Keiren will be with us more time. He has done fantastic for us.

“We are trying to keep the players who deserve to stay and are working hard all the time.”

Westwood recorded a shut-out on Sunday as the Owls kicked off their season in style, seeing off newly-relegated Aston Villa 1-0 at Hillsborough.

The only blot on Wednesday’s copybook was an injury to debutant Steven Fletcher. The striker was taken off in the 26th minute following a nasty head wound which required 10 stitches.

Coach Lee Bullen posted on Twitter: “Fletch: stitches, sore one.... will be assessed day to day.”

Full-back Jack Hunt is expected to quickly shrug off a calf injury.
