More 28 inches of rain fell on the town centre in a very short space of time, accompanied by hailstones two centimetres in diameter, according one eye-witness.

Roads were quickly turned into rivers and rail travel was disrupted with services suspended between Gainsborough Lea Road and Retford.

Lincolnshire police also reported flooding on the A156 Lea Road in Gainsborough, near its junction with Foxby Hill and that the road between Gainsborough and Blyton is also closed.

Elsewhere, the roof at the B&M Bargains store on Lord Street, caved in under the weight of water forming on top if it, forcing the shop to close for the rest of the day.

People have been tweeting and posting to Facebook pictures of the flooding and trouble it has caused.
