The incident happened in Worksop’s main shopping street, Bridge Street, at 7.30pm - in broad daylight.

Local people spoke of their shock at what had happened, as forensic officers collected evidence at the scene on Sunday lunchtime.

“I didn’t know anything about it until I saw the police here this morning,” said one elderly woman, who did not want to be named.

“It’s very upsetting and absolutely tragic for the man who has died - and for his family.”

Another man, from Dinnington, also said the events were ‘tragic’.

“It’s tragic but I can’t say I’m particularly shocked. This kind of thing is happening more and more in Worksop. It’s a sign of the times.”

“But I am very sorry for the man and his loved ones.”
