Bassetlaw: Pledge to the armed forces
Bassetlaw Council has acknowledged the crucial role played by the members of the armed forces their integral role in the community with the signing of the armed forces community covenant.
The signing took place at Retford Town Hall earlier this month and saw a number of different organisations, who provide essential services, gather together.
These included Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospital Trust, Notts Police and Notts Fire and Rescue Service.
The armed forces community covenant highlights the moral obligation between the community and the armed forces to provide support to servicemen, servicewomen, families and veterans who live and work in the district.
In signing the covenant the Bassetlaw Council will give the armed forces community their commitment to this support and will encourage further support by bringing together key partners in Bassetlaw.
The council also agrees to remember the sacrifice made by members of the armed forces.
Coun Simon Greaves, leader of Bassetlaw council, said: “I am honoured to represent the council in the signing of this covenant.”
“It has allowed our community, in unison with so many other institutions and organisations, to demonstrate that it is sincere in its recognition of the great services that have been made and will continue to be made by Britain’s armed forces personnel.”
Other organisations represented at the signing on 15th May included the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, together with representatives from the local cadet forces, British Legion and Help for Heroes.
The community covenant complements the armed forces covenant, which outlines the moral obligation between the nation, the government and the armed forces, which was published by the Government in May 2011.
It exists to readdress disadvantages that the armed forces community faces and to recognise the sacrifices that they have made.
