Brian had to have his bladder removed after being diagnosed with cancer in 2011.

His waterworks were replumbed in a urinary diversion operation and he was given support by The Urostomy Association.

The association, which relies on fundraising, has 2,500 members nationwide and Brian is chairman of its National Executive Committee.

Brian has organised a concert featuring Black Dyke Band, who were runners-up in this year’s European Brass Band Championship Contest - the champions league of brass bands.

The concert is at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall on Saturday, June 4, at 7.30pm.

Brian, who lives in Creswell, said: “My wife, Glynis, and I were brought up in the midst of the Notts and Derby coalfield and both had brass bands instilled into us from a very early age. Glynis’s dad played for Langwith and Thoresby Colliery bands and I was brought up listening to Creswell Colliery Band twice each week.

“My parents ran the Miners’ Welfare at Creswell and the band practised in the concert room so as we lived on the premises I could not escape the melodious tones of a brass band twice a week from the age of nine.

“On leaving school I joined the NCB and moved around the country finally settling back in north Notts towards the end of the 1980s. We have been supporters of the brass band movement for more years than we care to remember and regularly attend concerts.”

Tickets for Saturday’s concert cost £20. Call 0115 989 5555 or visit www.trch.co.uk or call 0115 989 5555.
