Every now and again concert-goers will hear music that will rock them back on their heels.

This was exactly the experience of Tickhill Music Society at the recent performance by Kosmos.

The line-up gave a clue that something special was coming – violin, viola and accordion.

All three were classically trained but had travelled extensively, collecting music along the way – Greece, Ukraine, Serbia, Scotland and Japan, along with gypsy fiddling and sultry tango.

The trio displayed dazzling fingerwork and an uncanny rapport which left the audience breathless.

Along the way there were arrangements of folk songs by Brahms, Dvorak and Sarasate.

At times the fiddles were in danger of combusting, at others producing yelps, croaks and other animal sounds not countenanced by grade eight of the Associated Board’s exams.

When it was all over, the only question was ‘how soon can we have them back?’
