Ward wasn’t along in the field, as fellow Road Runner Bert Wain – who is coached by Ward – joined him, and finished 259th out of 750 runners with a season’s best time.

Ward has invited local runners to join his sessions on a Thursday night, at Clowne Community Centre.

He said: “Training is geared for every ability regardless of age, and a weekly speed session is conducted in a safe environment under flood lights.”

Another of Clowne’s top runners, Gareth Lowe, won the Grindleford Gallop, beating over 350 runners with a time of 2hours 30minutes.

The 21 mile course had 3,000ft of ascent through the villages of Grindleford, Froggatt, Eyam, Great Longstone, Edensor and Baslow.
