Steelers land NHL ice hockey star Tom

THE Sheffield Steelers have pulled off a major signing coup, by landing a star from the National Hockey League.

Coach Ryan Finnerty confirmed that Philadelphia Flyers power forward Tom Sestito has joined the club and will remain with the Steelers for the duration of the NHL lockout.

A disagreement between the players and owners in the NHL has seen the league ‘locked out’ and Sestito has joined a number of his North American top flight peers in taking up playing positions in the UK’s Elite Ice Hockey League.

Sestito played 14 games for the Flyers last season, with a further 34 in Adirondack.

He has graced NHL ice for 27 games, scoring twice and collecting 147 penalty minutes.

A delighted Finnerty said: “I do like what Tom will bring us – some real size, toughness and presence.”

“He is a proven power forward at the American League level.”

Sestito makes his debut in Fife on Saturday night, before Steelers host title rivals Belfast Giants on Sunday, at the Motorpoint Arena at 5pm.

“I’m looking forward to it” Sestito added. “I know I can score goals. I play a hard nosed style.”
