Season ends on a downer

As in their last game, Dinnington left it late before they started to play and had the game gone on for another hour they might have come away with a victory.

After an even opening salvo, things started to go wrong for Dinnington when having won a penalty, and Bridlington throwing the ball away, they saw the decision reversed allowing Bridlington to take a quick tap and score in the corner for a 7-0 lead.

Minutes later, still riled by the previous decision, Dinnington lost a player to the sin bin when he failed to retreat 10 metres from a penalty and then made no effort to get out of the way.

This allowed Bridlington to pile on the pressure but Dinnington defended well enough to restrict the home side to just one converted try in the time they were down to fourteen.

Dinnington struggled to get out of their own half in the opening 40 minutes and did not help themselves by making too many errors.

However, they continued to defend well.

Twelve minutes from half time, Bridlington scored again when their number eight broke through and then straight from the restart the home side scored again to go 28-0 ahead.

It took Dinnington until the last five minutes of the half before they posed their first real threat but a good break was halted inside the home twenty-two.

In the final minute of the half the home side looked like scoring again but an excellent tackle by Alex Donnelly put man and ball in touch three metres out.

Despite being up against it for most of the half, Dinnington were showing some promise going into the break but victory seemed highly unlikely.

That promise quickly disappeared at the start of the second half as Bridlington scored twice in the opening five minutes and as Dinnington fell apart the home side scored twice more to lead 56-0 with twenty minutes to go.

Things were definitely looking bleak but Dinnington suddenly woke up and came close to scoring when Sam Palmer was tackled over the line but could not get the ball down.

Five minutes later it was hard to believe Dinnington were the same team as Tyle Stimpson crossed for a try converted by Jonny West.

Minutes later David Longstaffe powered over in the corner and West landed a superb conversion.

Dinnington were now looking at a bonus point and play flowed from end to end. Bridlington halted the charge with an unconverted try but tries from Matthew Starr, four minutes from time, and Palmer with a minute to go gave Dinnington a try scoring bonus. West converted the final try.

Dinnington were poor for most of the game but in spells they showed what they are capable of doing.

As they go into next season they know they need to be more consistent if they are to put in a serious challenge.
