'˜It was one of those days at the office,' reflects Spink after Worksop's defeat to Pontefract

Worksop Town caretaker manager Craig Spink said Saturday's defeat to high-flying Pontefract Colleries was just '˜one of those days'.

It had admittedly been a whirlwind 24 hours for Spink who took on the first team reins at the drop of a hat following Ryan Hindley’s decision to step down from his role as manager on Friday.

Hindley’s decision to resign from his management position came just days after the club had changed ownership, with local businessmen Paul Williams, Paul Tomkins and Niall Robertson taking control.

The trio bought out Jason Clark’s shares in the club to spark a welcomed wave of optimism around its fanbase. Clark had also written off a £550,000 debt he was owed by the club.

But the positivity took a knock on Saturday when three early goals proved too much for Tigers to overhaul - and stretched their winless run to eight in all competitions.

Caretaker boss Spink said: “It has been a whirlwind 24 hours, being put in charge and stepping up to the plate.

“I thought all the lads were behind us but they (Pontefract) were just clinical in front of goal.

“They’ve had three chances in 14 minutes and we’ve found ourselves 3-0 down, before that we’d had a couple of good chances.

“I thought we dominated large parts of the game but they are near the top of the league for a reason.

“We will go again, the lads have shown how good we actually are, there was some last minute changes and formation changes but all in all it’s very disappointing to take losing like that.

“I do believe though we did ourselves proud and worked hard and it was just one of those days at the office.”

Eli Hey tapped in on four minutes, Jack Greenhouf headed home inside the six-yard box on seven and Vaughan Redford volleyed in on the 14 minutes for Pontefract.

Tigers rallied in the second half, looking more of a threat when changing to a 4-3-3 formation, before a late Hey penalty wrapped the game up.

Worksop travel to Albion Sports on Saturday 27th January and face another away trip to Thackley on Tuesday 30th January in the NCEL Premier.
