Former Tiger Matty Caudwell will be back at Sandy Lane on Saturday as the club's Worksop Town Legend.

Here, Steve Jarvis, looks back at Caudwell’s career.

Matty joined Worksop Town from Doncaster Rovers, just after the start of the 2002-3 season, appearing on the bench for the Northern Premier League visit to Marine on 31st August.

His full debut came at home to Runcorn a few days later, but it was not until the second half of the season that he began to get a regular place in the side, scoring his first goal in a cracking 4-2 win at Altrincham on 1st March.

Playing on the wing or in midfield, he made 18 appearances scoring four goals. He survived the managerial change when Paul Mitchell was replaced by Steve Ludlam and played in the final of the Sheffield Senior Cup at Hillsborough in which Worksop beat Doncaster Rovers 2-1.

Retained for 2003-4, his appearances went up to 43, with a further nine goals scored. He again played in the Sheffield Senior Cup final at Hillsborough but this time Worksop lost 2-3 to Frickley.

A change in manager at the end of the season saw Matty sign for Gainsborough Trinity. He did return briefly in 2007-8, but only added five more appearances before moving on to Matlock Town.

Caudwell’s 66 appearances and 13 goals may seem slight but statistics take no account of the player’s popularity with the fans.
