The match started with both sides fully involved, a soft shot by Bates was easily dealt with by the home ‘keeper, while Rodzos was forced to juggle the ball on the goal-line to prevent a home goal.

Sinclair then shot into the goalkeeper’s hands before Slater shot over the bar and a Dinnington striker headed over. At this stage it was clear that underdogs Worksop were having as much of the game as their much more experienced hosts with some slick inter-passing to delight coach Julian Watts.

Butterworth headed a Bates centre just over the bar before the Dinnington number 10 shot wide. Butterworth was causing the home defence some difficulty and he again fired wide before captain Luke Abdy joined the fray having a firm shot saved.

Dinnington then saw an effort headed wide and Sinclair shot wide of the target before striker Rhys Butterworth received a straight red card for a late challenge.

The second period started with 10-man Worksop still on the attack as Sinclair galloped down the wing, while the home side were guilty of some poor finishing. A Gillatt back heel shaved the Dinnington goalpost as the visitors continued to play a very neat and effective passing game.

Around the 60th minute Ball came on to replace Bates who had run himself into the ground on the wing. Slater then shot just wide before being replaced by Longden on 65 minutes.

Shortly afterwards, as many of the officials and fans were trying to direct the referee’s attention to a prone Worksop player, the experienced Jordan Turner was able to score what proved to be the only goal of the afternoon while the visitors were down to nine men.
