Smedley takes titleat Lindrick

WORKSOP golfer James Smedley went down the road to Lindrick to win the Sheffield Amateur Championship.

After progressing through two rounds of match play a few weeks ago at Sickleholme Golf Club, the four semi-finalists fought it out for this much coveted golfing title over the famous Lindrick course.

Smedley got the better of Tom Pipes from Hillsborough by the score of 2 and 1 in the morning semi-finals, then faced long time Tinsley Park member John Bragger in the afternoon final.

Bragger had come through his semi successfully by the same score against 2011 Sheffield Plate winner, Nathan Rogers from Wortley.

In a closely fought final, the Worksop man eventually came out on top by a score of 3 and 1 and joins a long list of worthy winners of this prestigious championship that was first played 100 years ago.

He repeats the achievement of fellow Worksop golfer Ryan Brown who lifted the Amateur Championship trophy back in 2007.

In the SUGC Junior Match Play Competition, also played at Lindrick, Jamie Harrison from Rotherham defeated Jordan Perry from Phoenix in the final by the score of 2 and 1.
