Worksop boss: Get fit or you won’t play

Had Saturday’s game against Buxton gone ahead, exciting midfield talent Conor Higginson would not have been involved.

The manager explained: “We don’t think he’s fit, he’s trained maybe once since before Christmas.”

“He looked really rusty in training last week and I thought he wasn’t ready to go back in.”

“We’ve had him play through injury this season and if he’s not fully fit he’s liable to make mistakes.”

“He’s got a job to do to get fit, and I’ve got a job to do to look after him.”

“In the meantime I have a very competitive squad and there are players who are fit and more reliable, body wise.”

“But Conor is a fantastic player, he’s an important player for us and when he’s ready he’ll go back in.”

One player who won’t be pulling on a Worksop jersey in the near future, but has been earmarked for longterm involvement is Mitch Husbands.

The young striker is likely to be sent on loan to Goole to gain experience.

Shaw said: “He’s done nothing wrong, he started against Barwell and did alright, but he didn’t do enough to play instead of Jack Muldoon.”

“We’ll be keeping hold of him next year because he’s a very talented young player.”

“We have a little core of young players who we want to nuture.”

While weekend rainfall could make it two Saturdays without action in a row for Tigers, Shaw will have his men fully prepared for a trip to Witton Albion.

“We will have a contingency, something to do just in case, but we’re approaching it with the aim of going there to get three points.”
