Town want perfect start in FA Cup

DINNINGTON Town hope their perfect start to the season continues, as they begin their 2012/13 FA Cup quest on Saturday.

The Phoenix Park men welcome Atherton Collieries in the extra preliminary round of the world’s most famous knockout competition.

Manager Steve Toyne wants his men to take their momemtum from two victories in their two opening games of the season into Saturday’s cup clash – for the good of the club.

“Hopefully we’ll get a decent crowd in to see the game, it will be a good one,” he said.

“We really need a run in the FA Cup this season.”

“I’m very pleased with how we’ve started the season, anyone who has been to our opening games can’t fail to have been impressed with the football.”

The season began on Saturday, when Town beat Clipstone Welfare 3-1 away from home.

Ant Lynam, back for another spell at the club, got a double and Simon Mirfin netted in the victory. And on Tuesday night Town ousted Hemsworth Miners Welfare from the League Cup, in a first round tie at Phoenix Park.

Toyne said: “I’m not just pleased with the results, but the attitude and the work rate the lads have shown.”

“We’ve needed our strength in depth because we’ve only had one of our back five available, we’ve had injuries and players away on holiday.”

The boss was especially happy with Tuesday’s League Cup victory, as the players had to work hard to progress in the competition.

“Hemsworth are a good side and they’ll beat a lot of teams this season,” he said.

“Some of the football in the first half our was outstanding from us, and after that the work rate was a credit to the players.”

Grant Allott and Lynam were on the scoresheet in the win, but there’s a question mark over the latter’s fitness ahead of the FA Cup clash.

Toyne revealed: “Ant has picked up a knock straight after his goal, he’s got a knock on his ankle and that’s worrying.”

“Liam Cartledge is away for two weeks and Jack Stevenson is still not fit, so we may have to mix and match up front.”

Should Saturday’s game end in a draw, the replay will be at Atherton on Monday night, if not Town are scheduled to host Teversal in league action on Tuesdayt night.
