Musing Miller: A season containing plenty of ups and downs...

Five points is all that separated Rotherham United from a play-off place at the end of the season and it’s where they deserve to have finished.

This season has been a mixed one for the Millers, they’ve had plenty of ups and downs that have led to them just missing out on the promotion lottery that is the play-offs.

The start of the season was very rosy as the wins kept coming, but a period of 10 games without a result put the Millers outside the play-off places where they would stay for the rest of the season.

Since the 10-game dry spell it has been very inconsistent from the players in red, they’ve struggled to string good results together and find consistency.

A lack of fire power and a leaky defence have been the two main causes of the failure to make the play-offs this year.

The defence have proved sloppy at times conceding easy goals and the Lewis Grabban who has had interest from other clubs need s support in the front line.

It was confirmed they would finish 10th on Saturday as they let go of a one goal lead to draw 1-1 with Northampton. Adebayo Akinfenwa’s 94th minute equaliser snatched victory from the Millers in their final game at Don Valley Stadium as the club is set to move back to Rotherham in September.

For the fans the final day of the season was all celebrating the move home and the result didn’t matter as the customary pitch invasion took place. There will be very few fans who will miss Don Valley Stadium with its eye straining running track around the pitch and thousands of empty seats. Speaking to the fans before the Northmapton match chairman Tony Stewart said once they were at the New York stadium he would be dreaming of getting the club to the Premier League.

It’s a tall order for him to achieve but he believes with Steve Evans he has the right man to help the club to succeed and with Evans having achieved back-to-back promotions with Crawley he has the credentials to be able to propel the club up the divisions.
