Wayne Madsen aiming to hit it big and win England place

Wayne Madsen believes he can play his way in to the England side if he can hit ‘big runs’ this summer.

The South African born Derbyshire captain was granted English citizenship in February this year and has targeted a place in his new national team.

Madsen scored 1,221 Championship runs and was the first player to reach 1,000 runs in Division One during Derbyshire’s relegation season in 2013.

And Madsen knows that if he can recapture that impressive form he will be able to push himself in to contention.

Said Madsen: “I would love to play international cricket and I would love to play for England.

“To do that I need to get big scores in the Championship. I had a great 2013, but only an ok one last year.

“I’m looking to hit around 1,500 runs as that is the area you need to be in to play for England. You have to score big to be in contention.

“I think England are rebuilding. A few years ago it was a settled team, but now there are places up for grabs.

“There is uncertaintity in the England team and it is about putting yourself forward.”

And Madsen also does not think that playing his cricket in Division Two this time out will harm his chances.

“It would certainly be easier if I was playing in Division One, but it is still possible.

“Division Two players have been recognised before and if I score big I have got every chance.”

Durban-born Madsen was named as Championship cricketer of the year by the Cricket Writers’ Club during 2013.

Madsen has scored 7,039 first class runs at an average of 37.24, with a highest score of 231 not out.
