Old ‘Worksopian’ Root makes Ashes debut for England

Former Worksop College student Joe Root has made his Ashes debut this morning, with 30 runs for England.

The test series against Australia began at Trent Bridge today, with 22-year-old Root opening the batting for the host nation alongside skipper Alastair Cook.

Cook fell for 13, while Root remained until Peter Siddle bowled him with a full delivery to leave England 78 for 2.

Meanwhile, another Old Worksopian, Samit Patel, has today made a century for Notts at The Oval.

Playing against Surrey, Patel made 110 runs.
