That leaves Chris Read’s team with a lead of 17 and just six second innings wickets in hand after an afternoon in which all four of Lancashire’s main bowlers had enjoyed success.

The first batsman to go was Steven Mullaney, who was bowled for 21 by a ball which kept low from Jimmy Anderson. Nine overs later Greg Smith was caught at cover by Steven Croft off Simon Kerrigan for 41 when an attempted drive only succeeding in taking the leading edge.

Brendan Taylor was caught at midwicket by Liam Livingstone off Kyle Jarvis’s first ball of the afternoon to leave the visitors effectively 3 for three and Neil Wagner then had Michael Lumb lbw for 19 when he swung one into the left-hander.

Riki Wessels was unbeaten on six and Samit Patel was four not out when the players came in with a possible 40 overs left to be bowled on the third day.
