Birches and Drayton vie for second spot

With the Gainsborough and District Football League title safely secured by Mattersey FC the emphasis has switched to the remaining cup competitions, but with the recent extremely wet weather playing havoc with ground conditions it has proved to be almost impossible to arrange dates for the games to take place.

There are still two cup competitions to complete and the Ron Swinton Memorial Cup semi-finals have as yet not been played.

Both were due to be played last week and hopefully have been completed this week at least giving the league a chance to schedule a possible final.

Champions Mattersey FC drew their two fixtures played this week – against Haxey FC and BFC Birches respectively – but with an 11-point advantage they have been able to give their whole squad time on the pitch.

East Drayton have been the form team in the run-up to the end of the season and a 5-3 away win at Retford Town sees them challenging for the runners-up spot in the table.

This coming weekend’s game against BFC Birches may be the decider for this position.

The Trinity Challenge Cup Final that fell victim to the weather two weeks ago has now been re-scheduled for Tuesday 8th May on the Northolme with a 7pm kick off, but until Gainsborough Trinity know what their play-off position is no further finals can be arranged.
