Basketball teams both take first victories of the season

Both Worksop Basketball Club’s A and B teams enjoyed their first wins of the season last week.

Injuries and work commitments have prevented either side from playing at full strength so far this season, but superb team efforts were rewarded with impressive wins.

The B team set the ball rolling with victory over Hillsborough in Sheffield Basketball League Division Four action.

James Penrose sank a crucial three-pointer with 30 seconds to play as Worksop prevailed in a 46-45 thriller.

The A team followed this up with a drubbing of SBL Division Three new-comers Tenacious D second team.

Worksop built up a 14 point lead by the third quarter before Tenacious D fought back to within five points at 38-33.

Worksop regrouped however and saw out the game in style with a 29-4 demolition job for a 61-32 win.

Steve Lawes (15) and James Roberts (14) led the Worksop scoring.

The wins see both sides put some space between themselves and the bottom sides in their respective divisional tables.

The A team now face two difficult games over the Christmas period.

Second-placed Storm are next up for the A team, and a Bassetlaw derby clash with rivals Retford will follow on 2nd January 2014.

The B team also face the second placed team in a pre-Christmas showdown with Rotherham Hawks B, who beat them by 13 points earlier in the season.
