A guide to holiday fishing

FOLLOWING a number of enquiries from readers who are heading on holiday and want to get in a bit of sport, here’s our guide to fishing on the east coast.

First and foremost you generally don’t need to spend a lot on specialised gear, a heavy feeder or spinning rods coupled with a compatible reel loaded with 12lb-15lb line will generally suffice, but remember to add a shock leader as suffering a crack off on a crowded pier can have disastrous consequences.

Whitby and Bridlington piers are currently fishing well for mackerel and flatties, with lug worm of mussel the preferred baits. At this time of year crabs will strip your bait fairly quickly so check regularly that you aren’t fishing with a bare hook.

Also be extremely carefull if you catch a weaver as these can give a nasty sting. They are recognisable by the perch-like spines on their backs and these can penetrate a towel so try not to handle them.

At Hornsea and Aldebrugh, bass and rays are being taken off the beaches in the evening after the crowds. Spinning is particularly effective for bass cast only a short way.

Across the Humber at Skegness the stretch behind Butlins can also produce bass over the high water in the evenings. There are also a lot of boats offering short trips and there have been some reasonable catches of cod and mackerel, and most skippers will provide tackle.

This is a very brief guide but if you are stuck you can always ring Roger on the above number.
