Worksop gardener who appeared in Guardian aged 17 still going strong 30 years later

Rachel Moss was just 17 when she appeared in the paper in 1985 to announce she was stepping out alone in the gardening world.

Though people initially “laughed” at the idea, it was Rachel who emerged victorious after she qualified in C&G amenity horticulture, garden design and tree care at Brackenhurst College.

She has now been a self-employed gardener for more than three decades, transforming everything from “tiny postage stamp size gardens” to “Grand House gardens”.

Unfortunately, Rachel developed a trapped nerve in her neck which has meant she has had to change the focus of her business from maintaining gardens to offering advice and mentoring.

“This enables me to still enjoy my passion for gardening and helps others enjoy their gardens too,” said Rachel, who lives on Valley Road.

“I love to encourage people to garden. It is such a lovely pastime where you can create something beautiful that you can look at all year round.”

Rachel now helps identify, label and show garden lovers how to look after their plants, backed up with written reports.

She also offers personal shopping days, taking clients to her favourite nurseries to put the perfect collection of plants and accessories together.
