The book, written by Charles Emsen, sheds light on the lives of Manton Colliery miners who served during the First World War and was a result of over ten years’ worth of research.

Self-funded by Mr Emsen, the project has proven a success, with Retford Museum and Notts County Council snapping up copes for local history reference libraries across the region.

The grandson of Sgt William Henry Johnson, a Worksop man who went on to become Bassetlaw’s only Victoria Cross holder and features in the book, has also requested a copy.

Said Mr Emsen: “It was amazing that the grandson of Sgt Johnson contacted me. We have arranged to meet in the new year, with the view to discuss more of his family history.”

“The book is a result of 10 years’ worth of work and I hope it will be a lasting tribute for future generations.”

Copies of the ‘Underground and Over the Top’ are available to purchase in WHSmith Worksop and Retford branches, Newstyme on Bridge Street, Worksop or by emailing [email protected].

Mr Emsen will be signing copies of the book from 11am-1pm at the Extra Care charitable Trust Shop in the Priory Shopping Centre.

A donation of 20 percent will be made to the charity on every book sold at the event.
