The pair visited Anston Greenlands Junior and Infant School to pick up tips for their Tandem ‘Tour de Yorkshire challenge’.

They are currently riding all of the Yorkshire stages of the Tour de France in one week in aid of Sport Relief, and have already raised around £10,000 for the charity.

They dropped into Anston Greenlands for tips because of the school’s great sustainable transport record.

A total of 37 per cent of the school population arrives at school on a bike or scooter, and recently it awarded the Sustrans Bronze School Mark Award for its outstanding commitment to cycling.

And this year the school came second in Rotherham, and 134th in the UK, in the Big Pedal, a national inter-school cycling and scooting competition that encourages children, teachers and parents to choose two wheels for their school journey.

The two presenters spent the afternoon cycling around the playground, taking to children and asking advice from Natalie Whelan, the school’s Sustrans officer.

Headteacher Ann Jones said: “The children loved it. It was surreal to have two news presenters in school and the children all knew who they were after watching themselves on Look North.”
