Shireoaks: Marathon success after 10 years of applying

A Shireoaks woman has finally won a place in this year’s London Marathon - after 10 years of applying.

Claire Nixon has always loved running, but the most she ever ran was a 10km race.

After 10 years of applying for the London Marathon, she had almost given up her dream of running along the 26-mile route.

That was until now. The mother has finally won a place in the world famous race.

“I have always loved running,” she said. “The biggest race I ran was a 10km and then I got pregnant with my little boy three years ago.”

“I’ve got a treadmill in the garage. Everyone used to call me Forrest Gump.”

“I applied every year for ten years.”

“I cried when I found out I’d got a place. I can’t believe I’ve got a place at my age. I know I can do it and I’m hoping to do it in under five hours.”

Claire, 41, will be running in aid of Children with Cancer UK and has set a £1,500 target.

Claire is organising a race night is being organised at Kilton Golf Club on 22nd February to help her reach her target.
