Prospects for adult learners

People come back to college for all sorts of reasons – to gain the skills to get a job or secure promotion, to get the qualifications that they didn’t get at school or simply to learn a new skill for the fun of it.

Thousands of adults sign up for full and part time courses every year at North Notts College and the overwhelming feedback is that it is the most empowering thing they have ever done.

As well as offering high quality teaching, NNC has a wide range of support in place to ensure that learners succeed – whatever their challenges ranging from additional support for people with dyslexia to careers advice.

Among the adult learners who have taken the plunge in coming back to college is Laura Iles, 31, of Worksop who was at a low point in her life having lost her job in retail.

“After two months of despair something clicked and I decided to completely turn my life around and return to education,” she said.

“I enrolled on a Childcare and Education course. It was daunting at first but I got on really with all the students and tutors and I had help from the student support fund with the cost of my course and learning materials.”

“During my work experience at a local primary school I was offered a job as a playworker and I now plan to study for an Access to Higher Education Diploma to take me onto university to study Primary School teaching.”
