Police uncover £100k cigs haul in Misterton

Police and customs officials seized 400,000 cigarettes from a Misterton farm.

They were found last week in a rented building at a property in Cornley Road.

Although estimates of the potential sale value can vary considerably, it’s thought the loss to the Exchequer in unpaid customs duty and VAT is around £103,000.

A 58-year-old man from the Worksop area was arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.

Jennie Kendall from HM Revenue and Customs, said: “Tobacco smuggling is a serious crime. We and our law enforcement colleagues are determined to disrupt it.”

“Cheap tobacco products are far from the bargain they may appear. Often the goods are counterfeit and people may not know they are buying from those involved in serious organised crime.”
